The BC Teachers association has applied to the Labor Relations Board for permission to do an 8 day strike, and kids could see themselves on the outside of the classroom as early as Friday if mediation and an agreement doesn’t come swiftly.
I don’t like the idea of the teachers striking. It means my kids are going to miss school and learning and with Trace in kindergarten and JJ in grade 7, times of learning are important to them.
We are also one of the lucky families. Both FD and I are able to be home for the kids, unlike the thousands of Canadian families who will have to find themselves alternative daycare solutions over an already over-booked Spring Break holiday, which is both costly to families and time consuming.
However, we get what the teachers are trying to do and support the strike
Teachers are fed up and frankly I don’t blame them. They are asking our government for smaller class sizes, which means better teaching surroundings for our children. In my son’s kindergarten class which is small compared to some, there are 19 kids in total. In one of his friends classes, there are 26 students for just one teacher. That is ridiculous!
Teachers are asking for money to put into special needs programs to help deal with the rise of kids who need extra help. Instead our government has cut these programs, including several belonging to Child Development, whom were a tremendous help to us as a family during our son’s diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and Asperger’s.
Teachers care about our kids, they are under paid for all they have to deal with, meanwhile our government takes pensions and salaries that grossly over-paid and frankly a disgusting slap to us tax payers for jobs they don’t even deserve and aren’t even doing anymore.
The BC Teachers have promised they will give parents and students as much notice as possible before the strike happens. Teachers are angry over the government announcement last week that intends to legislate an end to a year-long contract dispute between the BCTF and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association. A bill is expected to engage new legislation this week.
It’s time the government proves to us that our kids and teachers matter. To support our BC Teachers please visit their website http://bctf.ca/ you can follow updates on Twitter @bctf and visit their FB Page for more information.

Did it ever occur to anyone that all this happening is the people’s fault? If the HST stayed, then this wouldn’t be an issue. People need to stop whining and live in the real world. Can I strike if I get too much work to do? I do not support whiners who says this is all for the children and yet getting paid more money will make them feel better.
