manage your thyroid: hair loss solutions for women

I used to have really long hair. It was so thick and curly and then I cut it short. It was still thick and wavy and I used to hate how thick it was, always praying for thinner hair because it would be easier to manage. Well — as age crept up on me, my prayers were answered.

I don’t know exactly when it started happening, but I began to lose my hair. I’m totally thinning on top, almost in the same spot my dad is going bald and I’m a girl. I never imagined that women could face hair loss without something like Cancer being a contributing factor.  That’s when my doctor told me I had to have my thyroid tested.

I’d like to welcome guest poster Sophie Banat who is sharing information with us today on why getting your Thyroid checked is important and hair loss solutions for women. Welcome Sophie!

Why should you get your Thyroid checked?

If you notice that your hair is thinning and beginning to fall out it could be a sign of an under-active thyroid, which is a condition known as Hypothyroidism.

Your doctor will order a blood test and, depending on the results, will start you on a drug such as Thyroxine. The levels of thyroid hormone in your blood will be measured regularly to check the balance is correct and the dosage will be tweaked accordingly.

This will not happen overnight and most women will want to do something about their hair immediately and this is where hairdressing products available today can really help.

Hair Beauty

Most women will try to back comb their hair to make it look thicker. This can help a little. The problem is it will also make the hair easier to see through and thus any thinning patches will be more
apparent.

Sometimes a visit to the hairdresser and a good cut and style will ensure any patches of scalp are hidden and the fall of the hair can give an impression of fullness.

The stylist will also be able to advise and recommend any products to help with the problem. Indeed, many instances of thyroid disease have actually been spotted by the stylist when they are cutting a client’s hair.

They are trained to recognise the signs and this can be such a help if you have been worrying about the condition of hair and wondering what on earth is wrong. There are many products available that can give the appearance of thick hair and these come in the form of shampoos and serums, which coat the hair shaft.

Certain products have tiny filaments of fibre that actually coat the existing hair. These come in a large range of colours to ensure a good match with your natural colouring.

Something Extra

To really beat the problem of thinning hair, a wig or hairpiece is an excellent addition to your beauty kit.

With a wig you can change the colour, length and style of your hair any time you wear it. Why have one wig when you can have several? They are available in artificial and human hair and can really give you confidence if you have a big occasion and want to look your best.

Hair pieces or extensions can be clipped in place and can be removed at the end of the day. They are easy to care for and will not affect your natural hair in any way.

Your hair is your crowning glory and the condition of it can reflect your general health and well-being. If you think you may have a thyroid disorder talk to your doctor and set the wheels in motion.

Thyroid disease can be managed successfully and thinning hair need not cloud your life and prevent you enjoying yourself. With clever use of any of the above suggestions it can be your secret.

You are not alone. There are millions of women with thyroid disease just like you who have sought advice from their hairdressers and live confident, happy lives.

  1. Hair loss can be a woman’s most frightening and frustrating experience. Thanks for making us aware of the thyroid connection to the problem. It’s better to get oneself tested in time and take proper measures before the loss becomes too apparent and embarrassing.
