National Costume Swap Day Canada: Changing How You Dress Up!

The kids are back to school full time and it’s been a great week!  I am already noticing the leaves changing, as Forgetful Dad and I empty our flower bins to make way for the upcoming holidays (Thanksgiving and Halloween) just around the bend. And every time we go out to go shopping, I always hear it.
“Mom, what am I going be for Halloween?”

National Costume Swap Day Canada Changes How We Dress Ourselves Up!

Okay I know you are asking – What the heck is National Costume Swap Day? I mean could there be such an amazing thing? Yes there could and there is.  Moms across the country are gearing up and planning swaps in their own towns, giving all of us the tools, tips and tricks to make swapping costumes fun, easy, sensible, more affordable and awesome for Halloween.Having a costume swap is a fantastic idea.  It helps us parents with costumes on hand that are too small, not what our kids want, worn last year not only get rid of our costumes, but perhaps swap them for something our kids would love to wear!

How Do I Host A Swap?

That’s the fun and easy part. NCSDC has made it easy for moms who want to host a swap with friends.  In fact in the video below Robin goes through some helpful “how to” tips to get you started.

The Key Factors

  • Finding a Location to host your swap
  • Setting a date for your swap
  • Advertising and spreading the word
  • Get some volunteers to help

What I Love About Doing A Costume Swap

I can’t believe we didn’t think of this years ago. When I think back on all the costumes I paid for and then donated to friends or Value Village or some other Donations place, I feel like cringing.
National Costume Swap Day Canada should be held on October 13, 2012 but you can really host it anytime you want. You can make it a strict swap n’ shop only, or have some fun with it. Those who hand in the best costumes get a prize, have some fun things for the kids to do, meet new people and even decided to share you ticket fees with the charity of your choice.

You can register your swap at NCSDC which is also cool as they do a lot to help us be and stay prepared.  You get a welcome package, get to be a part of something fun and easy to do.  You also get to make your kids happy by involving them and even letting them hang out and help out if you wish.

Note:  If you can’t host a swap yourself in your local area but know of a small business like children’s thrift shops, book stores, or natural food stores. You can suggest they host a swap. This a great way to get media attention for their store at next to no cost for them. Send them Captain Costume logo and a note on how awesome National Costume Swap Day Canada is and do something as a community together!
