Understanding Autism through Carley’s Voice

Austism – I’m sure there is someone you all know who has it.  Someone you love, a friend, grandchild, child and with so many different disorders on the spectrum of Autism. How can we truly understand what it really is and what it means to have it?

Carley’s Voice opens a door into the world of Autism unlike anything we’ve ever known!

Who is Carley? Carly Fleischmann is a young woman trapped inside a world that other people just don’t understand. A non-verbal teen, Carley has Autism. And she may not be able to speak but she does have a voice.

My name is Carly Fleischmann and as long as I can remember I’ve been diagnosed with autism. I am not able to talk out of my mouth, however I have found another way to communicate by spelling on my computer. (and yes that is me typing on the computer by myself) I used to think I was the only kid with autism who communicates by spelling but last year I met a group of kids that communicate the same way. In fact some are even faster at typing then I am. Last year a story about my life was shown on ABC news, CNN and CTV here in Canada. After my story was played I kept on getting lots of emails from moms, dads, kids and people from different countries asking me all sorts of questions about autism. I think people get a lot of their information from so-called experts but I think what happens is that experts can’t give an explanation to certain questions. How can you explain something you have not lived or if you don’t know what it’s like to have it? If a horse is sick, you don’t ask a fish what’s wrong with the horse. You go right to the horse’s mouth. — Carley

Carley has made extra-ordinary breakthroughs. She runs her own blog and tweets daily, engaging with others in a way that brings a new light to those suffering with Autism, but also to those who don’t understand what Autism is or those caring for someone with Autism.

Carley is a writer, a thinker, a passionate young woman. She’s smart and courageous and knows what she wants — a coke in a can please… Want to know what Carley thinks? Her What is Wrong With This World essay truly lends you into her mind and thoughts and passion she has for life.  Carley hits the nail on the head with this piece of work. And, she doesn’t stop there.

Carley is a book author. Her first book entitled “Carley’s Voice – Breaking Through Autism” is something that not only connects those who are dealing with Autism but those who care for and know someone who has it, and even those who know nothing.

What Do Other’s Think of Carley’s Voice?

“I have learned more from Carly about autism than any doctor or ‘expert,’ and she has helped me understand and connect with my son in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Her book takes the autism conversation to new places and disproves the ridiculous notion that non-verbal people with autism don’t have feelings and thoughts or are unintelligent. Carly is—for me—autism’s fiercest and most valuable advocate.”  —Holly Robinson Peete, actress, author, and autism advocate

To Our Readers

This is not a sponsored post. We were not compensated to write this about Carley. In truth, I saw Carley on the tv show the Doctors and was truly amazed by her empowerment I wanted to share it. Being a mother of a child with special needs, Carley helped me realize that maybe we don’t give our children enough credit to reach their full potential and that everyone can learn and change and grow.

We appreciate you taking the time to read this post. For more information on Carley you can follow her via her social networks on Facebook and on Twitter @CarlysVoice
