Canadian Beef and Safeway Canada make great partners!

Did you know that there are approximately 83,000 beef farming families across our great land that help produce the meat we serve our families?

So when the folks at Canadian Beef Inc. and Safeway Canada invited me to participate in a blogging opportunity to learn more about their partnership, I immediately jumped at the chance!  You see if you ask my boys what is for dinner, their usual reply is — BEEF!  And Canadian Beef and Safeway Canada make great partners!

I met with Mike at our local Safeway in Abbotsford, BC.  He is our local meat merchandiser for Safeway Canada in our district, and I was really excited to ask my questions.

Why Canadian Beef and Safeway Make Great Partners and what I learned…

  • Canadian beef for Safeway comes from Alberta.
  • Safeway gets their shipments every 4 weeks roughly.
  • Each shipment is prepped, cut and package in each individual Safeway stores and marked with Canadian beef labels
  • The meat is arranged according to traffic flow (chicken first) from Canadian chicken farmers, then Canadian beef and it can be found in sections such as: grilling meats, stew beef, stir fry, hamburger and so on.
  • For the majority of their lives, Canadian beef cattle eat a diet of pasture grasses and plants in summer and hay in winter months.
  • Plant-based foods are virtually the only source of protein used in beef cattle feed in Canada.
  • After the beef is received it can last up to 10 days and the triple A beef is good for 14 days.
  • The most popular type of Canadian beef for a family on a budget is hamburger, along with stir fry or stewing beef. Safeway Canada prices are always guaranteed.
  • Canada is one of the top beef-producing countries in the world.
  • Canada is the third largest beef exporter in the world.

We are all aware of our health nowadays. Did you know that eating lean beef does not increase the risk of coronary heart disease?  In fact fresh red meat, beef included, is not linked to heart disease or type 2 diabetes.  However processed meats like hot dogs, bacon, salami, sausages are.

Mike showed us how the beef comes into the Safeway store. Monkey had fun watching as one of the meat handlers prepped packages for that morning.  He even got to put a sticker on a few packs of beef, which he totally enjoyed!  I ended my conversation with Mike, thanking him for his time, after learning a few more things. Then it was time to shop!

Things Buyers Should Know…

  • Always open your meat when you get home and portion it out in proper freezer bags. Never freeze your meat in the package it comes in.
  • Ground beef can last up to 2-3 months in the freezer.
  • Steaks and Roasts can last up to 12 months in the freezer.
  • Safeway cuts all their meats on site and they guarantee freshness and quality. Each store goes based on what consumers are asking for. So if you want something at your local Safeway — Speak up!

Time To Cook!

I purchased some stir fry beef and FD and I and decided to make Chinese food for dinner after our great tour at Safeway. I love home-made Chinese food. It’s easier to make than people think.  Yummy chow-mein, chicken fried rice and beef and broccoli – ohhhhhhh so good!
